About VPA (Virtual payment address)

Previously if a person wants to transfer money to another person in India, he would need to know his bank account number, IFSC code, Bank name etc. But now when sending money through UPI (Unified Payments Interface) you need to have only the recipent VPA address. VPA address are like email address without the ".com" part and is of the form yourname@bankname . This way no private information like bank account number, mobile number need to be shared for money transfer.

One interesting thing of VPA address is that you can have VPA address of any bank and link to your own bank account. For example I have linked my State bank of India account to VPA address provided by United bank of India and created address shaplus@united (@united is address issued by United bank of India). For that I installed United bank provided UPI App and linked it to my SBI account in it.

Get your ideal VPA address

Here the links of VPA address issued by different banks are given, so you can get your desired VPA address of the form yourname@bankname . So even if yourname@yourbank is not available or is already taken, you can take yourname@someotherbank if available. For getting VPA of some other bank than your bank, you need to install that bank's UPI enabled app and add your bank account in it.

How to check if desired VPA is available in another Banks UPI App ?

Curently only way is to install that bank's UPI app from playstore and linking your bank account. After installing each UPI enable app, one sms will be automatically send when using it for the first time. This is requirement of UPI to validate the mobile number. Some apps allow to create more than one VPA address per bank account.
